    CALIFORNIA STATE ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATION

    CALIFORNIA STATE ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATION

    Assembly Bill (AB) 931, signed by the Governor in October 1999, required The Division of Apprenticeship Standards to establish and validate minimum standards for the competency and training of Electricians.

    RESPONSIBILITY
    It is your responsibility to send in your transcripts and paperwork Not the SFJATCs.

    ELIGIBILITY

    In order to be certified, an applicant must provide proof of experience which may be done by showing:

    1. Successful completion of an Apprenticeship program approved by the California Apprenticeship Council, the federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, or a state apprenticeship council authorized by the federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training to approve apprenticeship programs, in the classification for which certification is sought; or

    2. On-the-Job Experience, as follows:

    1. General Electrician 8000 hours of work.
    2. Residential Electrician 4800 hours of work.
    3. Fire/Life Safety Technician 4000 hours of work.
    4. Voice Data Video Technician 4000 hours of work.
    5. Non-Residential Lighting Technician 2000 hours of work.

    Anyone who does not meet the 2,000 hour requirement under the renewal process must retake the exam. To satisfy the renewal process, one must have 32 hours of continuing education and the 2,000 hour requirement with their $100 fee.

    DEADLINE

    The deadline for becoming certified is July 1, 2005 for (a) through (c) above, and January 1, 2006 for (d) and (e).

    There is a low pass rate for certification. If you fail you cannot re-test for 60 days. Read the PDF - this is an incentive for taking 32 hours continuing education

    CERTIFICATE RENEWAL INFORMATION

    You will need to renew your certificate every 3 years. You must complete 32 hours of continuing education prior to the renewal, from an approved educational provider in California. It must be from any one listed below:

    Community colleges, public school districts, public educational institutions; or, A state-licensed private post-secondary institution under contract with a community college, public school district, or public educational institution; or, Federal or state apprenticeship programs.

    And you must have 2,000 hours of work in the industry in the past 3 years. Your personal information, i.e., addresses and phone numbers must be updated with DAS.
